Kathy Miller is the Executive Director of Mount Desert 365. She has a long history of experience with nonprofits on MDI and beyond, as both professional staff and volunteer board member. She grew up in Connecticut, spent ten years in Washington D.C., and has since lived on MDI. What started as a one summer commitment on MDI has become a lifetime choice. After short stays in Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Bernard, she and her family have lived in the Mount Desert village of Somesville for 25 years.
Alex Birdsall is the Communications Manager for Mount Desert 365. Alex has experience as an educator, technologist, marketer and business developer in the public and private sectors. Alex and his wife relocated to her native MDI in 2011 and currently live in Southwest Harbor with their two young sons.
Board of directors
Lelah Cole grew up in Northeast Harbor and is passionate about the Town of Mount Desert’s revitalization. She used her background in professional writing, photography and as Managing Editor of a regional gardening magazine to launch a marketing business specializing in online marketing, branding, and identity items. During this time, she worked with both small, independent businesses and large metropolitan corporations to create and execute short- and long-term marketing plans. Lelah and her partner, Curt Strohacker, live in Devon, PA, and summer in Northeast Harbor, ME.
Rodney Eason is the CEO of the Mount Desert Land and Garden Preserve, which actively shares the beauty of certain historic gardens and lands on Mount Desert Island. A North Carolina native, with a background in public gardens and landscape architecture, his career has gradually brought him north, with positions at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine. Rodney and his wife Carrie love raising their four kids in Mount Desert, Maine.
Dan Falt is a sculptor who lives and works in Northeast Harbor, Maine. During the off season, he sculpts wooden animals, travels the world, and ice skates.
H. Winston Holt IV
Winston Holt serves as President and Partner of Electron Capital Partners, a New York-based investment management fund which focuses on global infrastructure and utilities investing. Prior to joining Electron, Winston was a Partner at Maverick Capital (2000-2016) and a Managing Director at Tiger Management (1991-2000). Prior to that he worked at Commonfund (1986-1991) where he managed endowment portfolios for a number of US educational institutions. Winston has served on several boards including Episcopal High School (Alexandria, VA), Part of the Solution (Bronx, NY), The Connecticut Challenge (Fairfield, CT) and College of the Atlantic (Bar Harbor, ME). Additionally, Winston is a Registered Maine Guide. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three daughters and divide their time between Darien, CT and Seal Harbor, Maine.
Mitchell Rales is Chairman of the Executive Committee and a co-founder of Danaher Corporation, a global science and technology innovator committed to helping customers solve complex challenges and improving quality of life around the world. He is also a director of Fortive Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of precision instrumentation and industrial technology products, and Chairman of the Board of Directors and co-founder of Colfax Corporation, a leading global manufacturing and engineering company providing gas and fluid handling and fabrication technology products and solutions. Mr. Rales serves as a trustee of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Mr. Rales and his wife Emily Wei Rales have established Glenstone, a not for profit museum located in Potomac, MD. Glenstone offers its visitors an opportunity to experience modern and contemporary art in a setting that seamlessly integrates art, architecture and landscape. The family divides their time between Potomac, MD, New York City and Northeast Harbor, Maine.
Steven Rales is Chairman of the Board of Directors and a co-founder of Danaher Corporation, a global science and technology innovator committed to helping customers solve complex challenges and improving quality of life around the world. He is also a director of Fortive Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of precision instrumentation and industrial technology products, and a co-founder of Colfax Corporation, a leading global manufacturing and engineering company providing gas and fluid handling and fabrication technology products and solutions. Mr. Rales also founded Indian Paintbrush Productions, an independent film production company based in Santa Monica, CA, which brought to life such films as Jeff Who Lives at Home, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Mr. Rales and his wife Lalage divide their time between Santa Barbara, CA, New York City and Northeast Harbor, Maine.
Nadia Rosenthal, Ph.D.
Nadia Rosenthal, who spent her childhood summers on Sutton Island, is a global leader in the use of targeted mutagenesis in mice to investigate heart and muscle development, disease and repair, having established research institutes in Rome, London, and Melbourne, Australia. With a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard Medical School, faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and Imperial College London, and honorary degrees from the Curie Institute in Paris and University of Amsterdam, she has returned to Mount Desert Island to continue her work with The Jackson Lab as the Scientific Director. She and her husband live in Seal Harbor and still spend their summers on Sutton’s.
